The volleyball Stars came away with another win on the road against Glen Oaks Community College on Thursday, Oct. 19.

LCC won the match 3-0, making this the 19th time they have swept a team this season. The Stars won the first game 25-23, the second 25-19 and the third 25-14.

With the win, the Stars moved their conference record to 9-1 and overall record to 24-2. The win also adds to their win streak, which is now 13.

The Stars put on an offensive clinic, having 40 kills within the three games. Sophomore Alex Widner led the team in kills with nine. Sophomores Ellie Robinson and Danika Fyan, and freshman Anna Hoch all finished with eight kills.

The Stars also finished with 36 digs on the defensive side. Sophomore Macey Beyerlein had 11 digs to lead the team. Freshman Karsyn Near followed with nine.

LCC Head Coach Emily Quintero said the match started slow for the Stars. She also said they were playing away on the home team's sophomore night and it was a bigger crowd than normal.

“It took us a second to adjust to that, but once we found our rhythm we kind of just went to work,” Quintero said.

Widner said it makes a big difference whether a match is at home or away.

“Having your family, friends and a student section adds another type of sound and energy in the gym,” Widener said. “It pushes you to play harder and not let the ball hit the floor.”

During the Stars’ recent contests, including the most recent match, Widner said the team’s strength shines through its long rallies and the final execution.

“Being the loudest team on the court is something we are also constantly driving for because it lifts the team's morale,” said Widner.

The impressive season the Stars have had is slowly coming to an end, and regionals are approaching.

There are two games left in the regular season; one is at home and one away. The Stars’ sophomore night is Tuesday, Oct. 24 against Marian University Ancilla in the Gannon gym.

On Thursday, Oct 26, LCC will play on the road against Lake Michigan College in a peace game in support of breast cancer awareness.

Quintero said her team plans on closing out the season strong to continue the momentum into districts, and has a few players she is relying on for strong defense.

“Definitely looking to our setter Karsyn, our libero Macey and our middles, which would be Ella Didion and Danika Fyan,” Quintero said.
