Bio

Tony Filipek is entering his 1st year as assistant cross country coach for the stars after a successful start to his NJCAA coaching career this past spring. In his first year as assistant track coach his athletes finished the season off with All-American honors in the 4 x 800m relay (5th place), 800m (4th place), and 1500m (7th place).

 

Prior to his time with LCC, Filipek served as a volunteer assistant at Oakland University in 2016, an NCAA Division 1 program. He primarily worked with the men's 800m runners. The 800m men swept the Horizon League indoor conference 800m with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. The outdoor conference meet saw the Oakland 800m runners finishing 1st place and 8th place.

 

Filipek, a former NCAA Division 2 All-American at 800m, also coached at SVSU from 2011-2014. The women's XC teams qualified for the NCAA Championships 3 consecutive years placing 13th, 12th, and 11th while he was there. He was in charge of a mix of middle distance and distance athletes on the track. His athletes received All-American honors at 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and DIstance Medley Relay. Two of his athletes also qualified for the USATF Junior National Championships at 800m and 3000m.

 

Filipek received his Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Science degree in 2011 from Saginaw Valley State, and his Master's of Education in Kinesiology degree in 2016 from Wayne State. He is married to a professional ultra marathon runner Dani Filipek, who has recently qualified for the IAAF 50mile Trail World Championships taking place in Spain in May 2018. Tony's personal bests include 1:49.3 (800m), 3:44.3 (1500m), 4:02 (road mile), 2:25:46 (marathon).
