Watson adds experience to male harriers

The Lookout Sports Editor Brodee Gillam recently spoke with LCC sophomore Blake Watson. The Corunna graduate is one of the seven sophomores for the LCC men's harriers this year. Watson was not able to run in the 2016-17 season but looks to be a big contributor this year.

What athlete inspires you the most?

"I'll give a shout out to Noah Jacobs. He's from (Corunna High School). He was a grade below me. He's going to (the University of) Wisconsin to run. He's really special to me; he always inspires me. He's always a hard worker. He never takes the easy way out; always takes it upon himself to get the work done."

Why did you start running cross country?

"I started in seventh grade, I started running track. I don't really remember why. In eighth grade I ran cross country and then just kept going from there. I met the high school coach and he was really nice, so I figured I'd keep going and I'm really glad I did."

What do you want to do after LCC?

"I don't really know yet. I want to transfer somewhere after LCC but I'm not really sure where yet. If I get an opportunity to run (at a university) I would like to."

What is your most memorable moment running cross country?

"Probably from high school. We were back-to-back regional champs and that was really special for us."

What is your most embarrassing moment?

"(In) winter, we were running and I was ahead of a couple other guys and I went to go turn on a corner and hit some ice and just totally ate it."

What do you want to take away from your time at LCC?

"It's a good stepping stone to another university. The experience of having almost like a high school feel in a college situation."

What are your goals for this season?

"We want to do really well at nationals. Last year, the guys were eighth and the women were first, so the women are looking to three-peat and the guys are looking to improve on last year. We're looking to do really well, we can probably (get) top-five. (That's) pretty realistic this year. For me, individually, All-American would be nice but I didn't run cross country last year so I don't really know for sure where I would stack up for that. I think running sub-26 (minutes). That's a good start."
